Looking to improve your smile, but not sure what treatment suits you best?

Braces or Invisalign? Which should I choose?
There are several factors to consider when beginning orthodontic treatment. One of the important decisions is choosing from the different systems available for moving teeth. Some people choose to have fixed braces and others choose Invisalign clear aligners.
Effectiveness
While there may be specific tooth movements or situations where fixed braces have some advantages over Invisalign, the opposite is also true. Depending on what you need, combined with what you prefer, we can help you make the right decision for your orthodontic treatment.
In most circumstances, either Fixed braces or Invisalign will give you the smile you want.
Appearance
Invisalign has clear advantages over fixed braces in this regard. Invisalign clear aligners are almost invisible and most people you meet will be unaware that you are having orthodontic treatment. Many adults will choose Invisalign for this reason.
On the other hand, many people are completely untroubled by the appearance of fixed braces and the majority of teenage patients have fixed braces. You can play around with different coloured elastics at appointments which many patients enjoy.
There are also ceramic brackets which can be used instead of metal brackets when doing fixed braces treatment.
It really depends on your individual work and social commitments along with your personal preference.
Compliance
Fixed braces have the edge on Invisalign in this department. You don’t need to remember to insert and remove fixed braces. They are glued on to the teeth and working slowly all the time.
Invisalign aligners are removed for meals and toothbrushing. Many will see this as an advantage but you must remember to put them back in and remember where you left them! For determined patients, compliance is not an issue. Again, it’s a question of personal preference.
Oral Hygiene
Maintaining good oral hygiene while wearing fixed braces is a challenge for everybody. You must spend a longer time brushing and caring for your teeth to ensure teeth and gums remain healthy during treatment. As Invisalign can be removed for brushing, maintaining good oral hygiene is easier.
Diet
There are certain foods which are challenging or just not enjoyable to eat when wearing fixed braces. Some foods will stick to or dislodge brackets and make cleaning after meals more difficult. The majority of foods are perfectly fine, having said that.
There are no real dietary restrictions with Invisalign as the aligners are removed for meals. As mentioned previously, some people will see this as a positive, others as a negative.
